Harness VS Collar - What should you consider for your dog?
Share
As a dog owner, it can be a difficult decision whether a collar or harness may be the correct option for your dog; however, with the correct education, this should become a little easier for you.
Comfort:
We want our dogs to be as comfortable as possible at all times; items that are not comfortable may cause pain and stress, which may lead to unwanted behaviours (aggression, reluctance to exercise, and changes to gait). The benefit of a harness is that any pressure, particularly when pulling, is distributed fairly equally, which will reduce discomfort. Some dogs may be predisposed or have ongoing medical conditions in which harnesses are therefore preferred, such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome (BOAS), or tracheal collapse.
However, it should be considered that collars are more lightweight and less restrictive, which some dogs may tolerate better. It should be considered that as dogs get older, they often develop arthritis, and some harnesses require the forelimbs to be manipulated, which may cause pain; this should be monitored.
Control:
Control is a key part of walking your dog and can prevent unwanted interactions, as although your dog may be friendly, the other dog may struggle with being approached. A harness creates more control and allows guidance in certain directions if required; this can also prevent lunging, which may be beneficial for overexcited dogs or training puppies.
Safety:
Harnesses are a secure option as they often have a variety of adjustable areas to create a snug fit, making them difficult to escape from. Some dogs can quite easily slip out of their collars, particularly those who are anxious or become spooked and feel the need to escape.
A harness should be worn if travelling in a vehicle, as the attachment of a seatbelt to a collar around the neck could result in a severe neck injury.
Conclusion
In conclusion both the collar and harness have their own benefits which may be specific to your dogs needs. Please get in touch if you would like any more information or advice.

Milo the Beagle benefits from wearing a harness (size medium) as he can excessively pull on a collar and can become a little too strong.
